Hi Appa,

So typical! This article, no wonder, is a hit among you all (parents).

I would not say that the entire view taken about the "attitude" of the girls mentioned here is wrong. Some of the views of these girls sound really silly! Especially the ones like "mood-out" when it comes to cooking, "yaar kooda pona" kind of things.

But one has to consider the fact that, women have been suppressed for such a long period of time that this sudden change leads to 2 possible outcomes-
  •  Society has not yet transformed to accommodate the ideals of the liberal women.
  •  Most women are not able to figure out the proper way to exploit this new-found freedom.

Thinking about it- though option 2 would mean that I must criticize about my own sex, I feel that it is a necessary introspection.

Only in 1829, Sati was abolished (1829 seems very near if you take into account the millions of years of suppressing women). Then came in various social movements- thanks to people like Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, we women folk are now getting the education we deserve. Today, where we women are, is a junction that is a result of a life-long struggle of many great minds.  To think that only around 1975, "age of consent" for women was 15! To even think about marrying at the age of 15, feels now, like a crime! Past this phase, there was a wide-spread support for emancipation of women power. There was an ideological shift in the society. From what I have understood, in retrospect, more educated people, felt the need and importance of
economic independence of women. Please note that even then, the society was not purged of evils like dowry or female infanticide. But there was a popular appeal for the said cause.

The trend was to portray a "modern woman". A woman, unlike in the past, who could think, talk, work, and do all that a man can do. She had a voice and a vision. Be it the new wave of parallel cinema or the paradigm shift in the literary world- this popular thought was well-documented.

Post globalisation and with the entry of alien "fashion" into the Indian soil- now armed with a certain level of independence, women started out with their experiments with liberation! The booming Indian markets could supply women with the latest in everything. But here, those parents, who were once so proud of their dream of seeing a "modern woman" in their daughters/daughters-in-law, failed to recognize that- this phase of women's liberation is missing one crucial aspect that is almost essential for every social change. No change can happen to one part of the whole. The part must take along
the whole with it. Popular support from one section of the society, had blinded the change as a whole towards the other sections of the society. This resulted in the stagnation of progress in the "minds" of the rest of the society while the women moved along with the change.

Besides, other factors like the "craze" for a "boy" child, etc., that were typical of the social systems of the past, found their way into the more evolved society. The result is, as you can see, a square peg and a round whole. This group have failed to notice the social change around them and have never adapted themselves to the change. So now, they find themselves among women who are totally contradictory to what they have always regarded as-how a woman must be.

Also, when the women have changed for the better, leaving behind them a whole chunk of a society, the society now refuses to accept the change that is so visible. Something so  "normal", such as- say a working woman- that is "normal" for one section of the "changed" society, seems alien to the rest. But this situation cannot be changed. Any change can only take a society forward, never backwards. So we can only wait for the rest of the society to accept that which is "normal" and keep up with the change.

Now the other aspect of looking at this change is- though the change has given the women a certain power to explore their freedom, it has failed to bring about an overall change in their thought. The change has only broadened the participating platform of the women. It has, however, not contributed towards their intellectual upgradation. Now, "modern women", though have changed physically and mentally- juggling career and family- or being traditional and modern- they have not changed intellectually. They must understand that they must cultivate a certain level of intellect- that would help them survive through this transitional phase. Only this, could help them understand that they have "elevated" yet there are many "beneath" themselves who need the women's help to catch up to the change. Women must understand that the change they have undergone, would only take effect if they have a certain level of intellectual acumen to strengthen their stand amongst the society. It is evident from the examples cited in the mail, that this intellectual upliftment in women is nowhere to be seen. It is no use blaming the parents or the women themselves.

Though every year, public exam result boasts of women leading the race- we must understand that this "race" is just marks and numbers and not wholesome development. Be it men or women, our education lacks in giving them any sense of "responsibility". Men or women- their standing in the society is Rs. ***lakhs per annum, **_ flat, **/****/*** education at ***/*** college. Social status in the current scenario, is not determined by the level of intellectual emancipation but such and such schools/colleges/clothes-brands-accessories/fashion/etc. Parents have remained to be proud spectators of the social change in their children, but have lacked in putting in serious efforts towards their own intellectual upgradation- let alone providing the same to their children.

It is hence my belief, that if women cultivate this intellectual acumen- they can change and question their own thoughts and beliefs and could also take along with them, the other less privileged groups of society, towards a beautiful future...

A female character named Marianne in Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" remarks- "I suppose I have erred against decorum. I should have been dull and spiritless and talked only of the weather...". You well know that this I could never manage to do- thanks to the way you and amma have brought me up! I am also sure appa, that you could have never brought me up as someone similar to the role of actress Saritha in the last scene of movie "Aval Appadiththaan"- you could have never done that even if you had wanted to. I also don't believe that you had sent this mail to me as a "dig" at our own situation on the similar issue.

So please note, appa, that this was written just in reply to your mail, in defense against the accusations in the mail- which seemed to me- too brutal towards we- the women folk...
